In the midst of the season, HC Metallurg captain Egor Yakovlev answered 10 of our questions.
Egor, please comment on your team’s victory in the fight for the Gagarin Cup. Was it an expected success?
I can’t say it’s a surprise. I have been dreaming of this for a long time and strived with all my might to realize my dream. It’s nice to realize that we have accomplished the task and reached our goal.
What did this victory bring for you? How did you celebrate?
The honoring took place in several cities. Each of the guys could bring the Cup to his hometown. The main celebration took place in Magnitogorsk.
Being a winner is not only honorable but also responsible. How do you plan to maintain your reputation?
This is not the first victory for me. I believe that you should never relax – there is always something to strive for.
The summer passed quickly. Did you manage to rest?
A little bit.
The hockey season is in full swing. How are the training sessions going?
The hockey season is almost daily training and games every other day. But even during the rest, we try not to fall out of the regime — so it’s easier to get back into action later.
Egor, can you tell us, please, what are the duties of the team captain? And how often is he elected?
The captain is the person who motivates the team. Hockey is a team game after all, and communication between all players is important here. The captain should be listened to, he plays an important role.
I’m glad to lead the club where I grew up. It’s even more pleasant that it happened after Sergei Valeryevich Mozyakin, who was the captain for 8-9 years.
What do you enjoy during the high season? What is in the diet of hockey players?
A hockey player’s diet should always be balanced to have enough strength not only to go on the ice, but also to beat the opponents.
Which team is the next game against?
Three home games against Sibir, Avangard, Barys
Your son is also fond of sports. Would you like him to become a famous hockey player?
Whatever he chooses, I will certainly support him. I try not to put pressure on him in this regard. I want him to choose what is closer to him.

Winner of the Gagarin Cup in 2017 and 2024, winner of the Golden Helmet Award and the most productive playoff defenseman of the 2021/2022 season.
