UEFA Conference League 2025-2026
Conference League 2025-2026

Conference League 2025-2026 is the 5th anniversary season of Europe’s youngest club football tournament, which will be held from July 8, 2025 to May 27, 2026. This season is significant not only for its round date, but also for the continuation of the revolutionary format based on the “Swiss system”, which will be used for the second time.

The idea of the tournament is not new. Until 1999, there were three main club tournaments in Europe: the European Champions Cup (now the Champions League), the UEFA Cup (now the Europa League) and the Cup Winners’ Cup. The Conference League has become a modern analogue of the third tournament in order to give clubs from low-ranking countries a chance to play in Europe.

The tournament cup is a work of art. It is made of silver, weighs 11 kg, and its shape symbolizes the movement of football players in the fight for the ball. The base of the trophy consists of 32 sides, according to the number of teams starting in the group stage.

Key features of the tournament

  1. Single league table: All 36 clubs will play in a single league. Each team will play 8 matches (4 at home and 4 away) against 8 different opponents determined by seeding.
  2. Reaching the playoffs: Based on the results of this mini-championship:
    1. The teams ranked from 1st to 8th automatically advance to the 1/8 finals.
    2. Clubs from 9th to 24th places will play in play-offs for the right to join the top eight. The teams ranked from 25th to 36th will leave the tournament.
  3. Play-off matches: Pairs are formed according to the principle: 9th against 24th, 10th against 23rd and so on. The higher placed teams will gain home field advantage in the second match.
  4. Draws: All draws (except the final) are shared, without baskets. This means that clubs from the same country or long-time rivals may come together in the early stages.

The main game day of the tournament is Thursday. The exception will be on December 18, when only one game is scheduled. The finals, which traditionally take place on Wednesday, may be postponed to Tuesday this season due to possible scheduling conflicts.

The 2025-2026 season will be marked by the debut of a number of teams in the group stage of European competitions, such as Crystal Palace, Rayo Vallecano and Sigma Olomouc. The performance of the Maltese Hamrun Spartans was historic — this is the first club from Malta to make it to the main stage of the UEFA tournament.

Interesting fact! The word “Conference” was not chosen by chance. It was meant to emphasize that the tournament provides a platform for meetings (“conferences”) of clubs from different parts of Europe that would not otherwise have played each other.

Unlike the Champions League and Europa League finals, which are often held in capitals, the UEFA Conference League Finals are held in smaller stadiums, often in “second-tier” cities. The first vial, for example, was held in Tirana (Albania), which became a historic event for the whole country.

Since the tournament was founded in 2021, Russian clubs have participated only in the first draw (2021/2022), finishing at the stage of the third qualifying round. They will not participate again this season, remaining suspended from FIFA and UEFA competitions.
