NHL 2025-2026 season
NHL 2025-2026 season

NHL 2025-2026 is the 108th season in the history of the National Hockey League. The tournament starts on October 7, 2025, and its culmination, the presentation of the main trophy, is scheduled for June 2026. Since 2021, 32 clubs have been competing in the championship: 25 from the USA and 7 from Canada.

The season promises to be especially exciting for Russian fans. The focus is still on the key figures whose game largely determines the fate of their teams. Alexander Ovechkin (Washington), Artemy Panarin (New York Rangers), Evgeni Malkin (Pittsburgh) and Andrey Vasilevsky (Tampa Bay) are expected to play not just a bright game, but real leadership, decisive victories and new records.

Tournament format: from regular season to playoffs

In the regular season, each of the 32 teams will play the traditional 82 matches (plans to increase to 84 games will take effect later). The scoring system remains the same:

  • 2 points is a win in regular time.
  • 1 point — defeat in overtime or shootout.
  • 0 points — a loss in the regular season.

The team that tops the standings at the end of the season will be awarded the President’s Cup.

The three strongest teams from each division advance to the playoff round, as well as the two clubs from each conference that have shown the best result among the others (wild card). Next, an uncompromising elimination battle begins, where each series is played to four wins. There are no draws: if there is no winner in regular time, the fate of the match is decided by a non-stop overtime until the first goal is scored.

Interesting fact! NHL players don’t get paid during the playoffs. Instead, there is a special prize pool from which money is distributed among the teams depending on their success. The further the team goes, the more each player gets.

Trophies and calendar changes

The crowning achievement of the season for the champions is the coveted Stanley Cup. A legendary silver trophy with a massive base, on which the names of all the players and coaches of the winning team are forever engraved. In addition to team awards, personal awards are also awarded in the league: according to the statistical indicators of the regular season (the best scorer, goalkeeper, etc.), and according to the results of the playoffs, the Most valuable player (MVP) and Coach of the season are determined.

An important calendar change will be the absence of the traditional All-Star Game. Instead, a special event dedicated to the Olympic movement will be held at the UBS Arena. The return of the star weekend is scheduled only for 2027.
