The Russian Premier League (RPL, RFPL) is the elite division of Russian football, uniting 16 of the strongest clubs that have passed the strict licensing selection of the RFU. The 2025/26 season promises an intense struggle with unpredictable results and heated confrontations.
The season starts on July 18, 2025 and runs until May 17, 2026. In total, the teams will play 30 rounds (two rounds – home and away). According to the results of these matches, the champion of Russia and two prize-winners are determined. The games are held in accordance with the rules of the International Council of Football Associations (IFAB) and the rules of the RPL championship.
Scoring system and team rating:
- Victory — 3 points
- Draw — 1 point
- Loss — 0 points
The standings are based on the total points scored. If the indicators are equal, the following criteria are applied (in order of priority):
- The results of personal meetings between the teams.
- The number of wins in the season.
- The difference between goals scored and conceded.
- The total number of goals scored.
Rules of elimination and transitional matches:
The teams ranked 15th and 16th automatically leave the league, giving way to the two best clubs from the First League. The clubs that finished the season in 13th and 14th place play play-off matches against the 3rd and 4th teams of the First League. The winners of these pairs get the right to compete in the RPL next season.
The winner of the league receives the title of Russian Football Champion, is awarded with gold medals and the trophy of the Russian Premier League. In addition, clubs receive cash payments from 300 million rubles to 1 billion. 200 million, depending on the occupied place, the media of the club.
Favorites: Zenit, CSKA, Krasnodar.
Dark horses: Rostov, Dynamo (increased in the off-season).
Candidates for departure: Ural, Orenburg, Baltika.
Due to the sanctions, Russian clubs still do not participate in the Champions League and the Europa League. This increases competition within the country, but reduces motivation for star transfers. But despite the isolation, the RPL remains a spectacular championship with unpredictable results.
Before the start of the new RPL 2025-2026 season, the football community found itself in the midst of high-profile scandals. Refereeing errors, corruption investigations, club conflicts with the RFU, and even criminal cases have all created a tense atmosphere on the eve of the championship.
Will it affect the sports component? Time will tell, but one thing is clear — football passions in Russia go far beyond the field.
