Fonbet KHL Championship 2025-2026 is the eighteenth season in the history of the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL), the main hockey league of Eurasia. The tournament will continue the tradition of fighting for the main trophy — the Gagarin Cup, which will be attended by clubs from Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan and China.
The regular season starts in Yaroslavl on September 5, 2025. As part of the tournament, the teams will play 68 games over 182 days. The playoff round is scheduled for the period from March 23 to May 23, 2026.
Tournament format
Regular championship: 22 teams will be divided into two conferences — Western and Eastern — and four divisions (Tarasov, Kharlamov, Chernyshev and Bobrova). Each team will play 68 matches.
Gagarin Cup (playoffs): combined format. The first round, as always, is held within the framework of conferences. Next is the cross—format between the “West” and the “East”. This means that the pairs of the second round are formed according to the principle of “strong with weak” from different conferences (for example, the 1st number of the West against the 4th number of the East). There will be no rescheduling of teams before the semifinal series.
Pauses in the championship:
– Channel One Cup: from December 8 to December 15, 2025.
– New Year’s break: from December 31 to January 2, 2026.
– Hockey Stars Week: from February 6 to February 9, 2026.
The main feature of the schedule will be the absence of a pause for the Winter Olympic Games. This will be the first such precedent in the history of the League, when the championship will go on as usual, regardless of the performance of the national teams.
Main changes this season
Reduction to 22 teams: Vityaz (Podolsk) He withdrew from the tournament due to financial difficulties and was suspended from participation in the KHL until 2030.
Division rebalancing: To maintain parity, Lada Togliatti moved from the Eastern Conference (Kharlamov Division) to the Western Conference (Bobrov Division).
The Chinese club’s rebranding: Kunlun Red Star was renamed Shanghai Dragons after the change of ownership and symbolically “moved” from Beijing to Shanghai. The actual base of the club in St. Petersburg and its place in the Tarasov division remain unchanged.
The upcoming KHL championship is characterized by incredible competition. The list of candidates for the Gagarin Cup is as wide as ever. The favorites are traditionally well-staffed and financially stable clubs from Moscow, St. Petersburg, Yaroslavl and Magnitogorsk. However, as last season showed, any team that makes the playoffs is capable of making a big splash.
