2026 Olympics: Types of sports

The 2026 Games program will include eight sports, including both classic disciplines and new, dynamic formats.

The main new additions to the program are:

  • The debut of ski mountaineering with three sets of medals (men’s and women’s sprint, mixed relay).
  • Parallel freestyle moguls (men and women).
  • Women’s doubles luge and women’s large hill ski jumping.
  • Mixed team competitions in skeleton.
  • The trend towards equality: Milan is expected to see a record proportion of female athletes — 47% of the total number of participants. In cross-country skiing, for example, women will compete in the same distances as men for the first time, including the 50-kilometer marathon.

More than 2,900 athletes are expected to participate in the Games, competing for 116 sets of medals in 16 disciplines:

2026 Olympic Games

The 2026 Olympic Games (Olympics 2026) are the 25th Winter Olympic Games and the third games to be held in Italy under the auspices of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). The competitions are scheduled for February 6-22, 2026.

The Games will be spread across two clusters, allowing existing infrastructure to be used and minimizing the cost of building new facilities.

Milan Cluster (Urban and Ice Disciplines)

Main venues: Giuseppe Meazza Olympic Stadium (opening and closing ceremonies), Mediolanum Forum (figure skating, short track), PalaLido ice arena (hockey).

– Special feature: Milan will become the center of ice sports and the venue for the main ceremonies.

Cortina d’Ampezzo Cluster / (Mountain and Ski Disciplines)

– Main venues: The famous Tofana slopes and Olympic ski jumps in Cortina d’Ampezzo; the ski and biathlon complex in Antholz; the slopes in Val di Fiemme.

– Special feature: This cluster will host all alpine skiing competitions, bobsleigh, skeleton, and luge, as well as cross-country skiing and ski jumping.

The 400 km distance between the clusters will not be a problem, but rather part of the Games’ philosophy. Spectators and athletes will travel from the future to the past and back in three hours on high-speed trains. It will be an Olympic journey, an Olympic discovery of two Italies.

The organizers are placing particular emphasis on sustainable development and legacy. Most of the venues already exist and will be modernized, minimizing the environmental footprint. After the Games, these venues will continue to be used for sports and tourism. The Games are expected to give a powerful boost to the development of the entire region, improve transport infrastructure, and attract new tourists.

A key project is the restoration of the legendary Italia ski jump in Cortina, an architectural monument from the 1920s. It will not be demolished, but carefully integrated into the landscape, making it a symbol of a conscious approach. Even the Olympic Village in Milan will be transformed into a modern student campus after the Games, and in Cortina into elite housing.

Mascots and Symbols

2026 Olympic mascots

The mascots of the 2026 Olympics, Tina and Milo, are more than just symbols. Each of them carries a special idea:

– Tina is the embodiment of grace, harmony, and the aesthetics of winter nature.

– Milo expresses the energy, speed, and competitive spirit of sport.

Their names are closely associated with Italy and winter sports. The design emphasizes unity, and Flo’s cheerful entourage of snowdrops adds a touch of diversity and team spirit to the main sporting event.

Participation of Russian athletes

As before, Russians will only be able to participate in individual disciplines under neutral status. According to preliminary data, quotas have been allocated to representatives of six federations, including ski mountaineering, speed skating, and luge. Figure skater Adelina Petrosyan and skier Savely Korostelev are seen as key contenders for medals. Participation in team sports (hockey, curling), as well as in biathlon and some other disciplines, is excluded.
