UEFA Europa League 2025-2026
UEFA Europa League 2025-2026

The Europa League 2025-2026 is the 55th edition of the second most prestigious club tournament in the Old World, which will be held in an updated format. The tournament will begin on July 10, 2025 with the qualifying rounds and will end with the grand final on May 20, 2026 at the Besiktas Park Stadium in Istanbul.

78 teams from 33 football associations will compete for the trophy. Some of them will start the way with qualification, while others will join later, having been eliminated from the Champions League. In the main stage, each club will play 8 matches (4 at home, 4 away) against 8 different opponents.

The rating of the teams is formed in one general table, where the place is determined by the points scored. If the points are equal, the advantage is given to the team with the best goal difference, followed by the number of goals scored.

The final position in the table decides the fate of the teams:

  • 1-8 places: Passage to the 1/8 finals.
  • 9th-24th places: Advance to the playoff play-offs (1/16 finals).
  • 25-36 places: Elimination from the tournament.

The playoff rounds, starting from the 1/16 finals, are held in the format of two matches (home and away), and the final consists of one meeting on a neutral field.

The winner of the tournament will receive not only a prestigious silver cup weighing 15 kg, but also a guaranteed place in the group stage of the Champions League next season and a large cash prize. In addition, the champion will have the right to compete for the UEFA Super Cup with the winner of the Champions League.

Interesting fact! Russian forward Dmitry Kirichenko scored a hat-trick in 11 minutes (from the 56th to the 67th minute) in 2004, playing for CSKA against Portuguese Sporting. This record has not been beaten in the tournament so far.

The undisputed record holder of the tournament is the Spanish Sevilla, which has won the trophy 7 times and never lost in the final. Russian clubs are also among the winners: CSKA (2005) and Zenit (2008). However, Russian teams will not participate in the current draw, as in previous ones, due to the decision of the UEFA Executive Committee on May 2, 2022 to suspend their admission to competitions under the auspices of the organization.

The Europa League is often referred to as the “little brother” of the Champions League, but this tournament has its own appeal. It often involves clubs with rich backgrounds that do not compete in the strongest leagues, as well as teams that demonstrate the utmost dedication. This leads to extremely unpredictable matches.
