Champions League 2025-2026
Champions League 2025-2026

2025-2026 UEFA Champions League is the 71st season in the history of Europe’s premier club football tournament. The competition, which will be held from July 8, 2025 to May 30, 2026, will be marked by a number of revolutionary changes and unique events. 82 teams will take part in the fight for the prestigious trophy, which will go from qualification to the playoffs.

The season will be the second in a row, which will be held in a completely new format. The traditional groups of four teams are a thing of the past. Now all 36 clubs that have qualified for the main stage form a single league. Each team will play 8 matches (4 at home and 4 away) against 8 different opponents.

Based on the results of this mini-championship:

  • Places from 1st to 8th give a direct ticket to the 1/8 finals.
  • The teams ranked 9th through 24th will play in an additional round of the playoffs for reaching the 1/8 finals.
  • Clubs from 25th to 36th place will finish in the tournament and will not qualify for the Europa League.

Important innovations in the playoffs

The elimination rounds, except for the finals, still consist of two matches. However, important tactical additions have appeared:

Privileges for the strongest: the teams that took 1st to 4th places in the group stage will have the right to play the second leg of the quarterfinals on their own field. The top two clubs of the stage will also play the second semi-finals at home.

The “seeding inheritance” system: if a highly ranked club loses in the playoffs, its advantages (for example, the first seeding number and the right to play the second leg at home) pass to the winner.

Features of the participants of the 2025/26 season

Suspension of teams: Russian clubs, as before, will not be allowed to participate in UEFA tournaments. Also, teams from Liechtenstein will not participate in the tournament, as they do not have their own championship and play in the Swiss league system.

Historical openings: The Norwegian Bude-Glimt, Kazakhstan’s Kairat, Cyprus’s Pafos and Belgium’s Union Saint-Gilloise will make their debuts at the main stage.

Ukrainian anti-record: For the first time since the 2005-2006 season, no Ukrainian club was able to qualify for the main stage of the tournament.

Finale and reward

The final match of the tournament will take place on May 30, 2026 at the Puskas Arena stadium in Budapest and, as always, will be held in a single match format. The winner will receive a legendary cup, a 73.5 cm high and 7.5 kg gold—plated silver amphora with the names of all previous champions engraved on it. In addition to the trophy, the club will earn a substantial cash bonus, as well as tickets to the UEFA Super Cup and the Club World Cup.
