Conference League 2023-2024 schedule

Conference League 2023-2024 is the 3rd season of UEFA’s third-tier club tournament after the Champions League and Europa League. The tournament is open to teams that have finished top of the European national championships, as well as teams that lost in the qualifying rounds of the Champions League and Europa League.

A total of 178 teams from 55 European countries will take part in the 2023-2024 tournament (except for Russia, whose teams were suspended for political reasons). The format of the tournament does not differ from the “big European brothers”.

At the group stage of the competition are also 32 clubs, which will play 6 games (2 matches with each opponent home / away). All matches are played according to the regulations of the UEFA Conference League and the official rules of the International Council of Football Associations IFAB. A club will receive 3 points for a win, 1 point for a draw and 0 points for a loss.

The winner of the group goes to the 1/8 finals, but the second place guarantees only a trip to the 1/16 finals or the preliminary stage of the playoffs with a team from the Europa League. The teams that finish third and fourth in the group are eliminated from the tournament.

From Season 4, UEFA will introduce a new tournament format based on the Swiss system. Instead of a group round, teams will play 10 matches each in a single league of 36 participants, with the top 8 teams advancing to the play-off round. The teams that will be ranked from 9th to 24th place will play an additional round of playoffs for the right to play in the 1/8 finals. Thus, teams that previously finished 3rd in the Europa League group stage will no longer be able to advance to the UEFA Conference League 1/16 finals.

The Conference League play-off round consists of two matches (home/opponent’s stadium). The team that scores the most goals advances to the next round. The final match will take place on May 29, 2024 in Athens at the Ayia Sofia Stadium.

The winner of the tournament will be awarded with a bronze cup with galvanized steel effect weighing 11 kg and a substantial cash prize, ≈ 5 million euros. In addition, the club will receive a ticket to the group stage of the Europa League for the next season.

The scoring statistics in the Conference League are similar to the Europa League: 2.69 vs. 2.7 goals per game, but the attendance is much lower: 14,737 vs. 28,850 per game. The reigning Conference League Cup winners are English club West Ham United, who finished only 14th in the 2022-2023 APL season.
