KHL 2024-2025 is the 17th season of the Kontinental Hockey League, which will feature teams from Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan and China. The tournament kicks off on September 3, 2024 with the Opening Cup, where Metallurg Magnitogorsk and Lokomotiv Yaroslavl will meet.

The league is divided into 2 conferences: “West” and “East”, each of which includes two divisions. In the Western Conference, these are the Bobrov and Tarasov divisions, and in the Eastern Conference, the Kharlamov and Chernyshev divisions.

The 2024-2025 season will feature 23 teams, each playing 68 games during the regular season. A total of 782 games will be played over 187 game days. The playoff round (Gagarin Cup) will take place from March 26 to May 25, 2025.

The first-place team in the regular season will receive the V.V. Tikhonov Continental Cup. Teams ranked 1st through 8th in both conferences will be eligible to participate in the playoffs.

Interesting fact! The Gagarin Cup weighs 20 kilograms and is made of sterling silver. At a price of 84 rubles per gram, its value is 1,680,000 rubles. 15 jewelers worked on creating the Cup. The Cup bowl holds 16 bottles of champagne, which allows each player of the team to drink three glasses.

The first round of the KHL 2024-2025 playoffs will follow the pattern of the previous season. Starting with the quarterfinals, the teams will be cross-divided into two groups. In the first group, the top team of the East will face the 4th team of the West, while the second team of the East will play the third team of the West.

Conversely, the first West team will face the fourth East team and the second West team will play the third East team. The winners of these pairings will face each other in the next round. Each round of the playoffs will be a series of games played to four wins.

A cross-division of teams will allow two teams from the same conference to advance to the final series. At the end of the final series, the winner of the Gagarin Cup is determined. The winner gets the title of Russian hockey champion, while the loser gets silver honors. The bronze medal is won by the team that will be the best of the two teams that lost in the semifinals.

• Best rookie of the season – Ilya Nabokov of Metallurg.
• Best scorer among defensemen and most useful player – Alexander Nikishin of SKA (56 points; +32).
• Best goalie of the season – Daniil Isaev of Lokomotiv (1.94 reliability rate in 49 games).
• The first hockey player to play 1,000 games in the KHL – Evgeny Biryukov of Salavat Yulaev.
