The Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) is an open international ice hockey tournament in which teams from Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan and China take part. The 2023/2024 season is the 16th in a row and will begin on September 1, 2023 with the Opening Cup.
The Hockey League is divided into 2 Conferences (West and East). Each conference is divided into two divisions. In the Western Conference, these are the Bobrov and Tarasov divisions, and in the Eastern Conference, the Kharlamov and Chernyshev divisions.
In the 2023/2024 season, 23 teams will perform, which will play 68 games each during the regular season. The teams will play 782 matches in 165 game days. The playoff round will be held from February 29 to April 29, 2024.
The team that takes the first place in the regular season will be awarded the V. V. Tikhonov Continental Cup. The teams that will take 1st to 8th place in the Eastern and Western Conferences will receive a ticket to the Gagarin Cup playoff round.
The first round of the 2023-2024 KHL playoffs will be held according to the standard scheme within their conferences, and from the second (1/4 finals) there will be a cross-division of teams into two groups. In the first group, the best team of the East will play with the 4th team of the West, and the second team of the East with the third team of the West.
In the second group, the best team of the West will face the fourth team of the East, and the second team of the West will face the third team of the East. The winners of these pairs will play each other in the next round. Each round of the playoffs takes place in a series of games up to four wins.
The cross-division of teams will create a chance for two teams from the same conference to reach the finals at once. The final series of games will determine the winner of the Gagarin Cup and the Russian Hockey Championship, as well as the silver medalist. The bronze medal winner will be chosen from among the eliminated semifinalists.
CSKA Moscow and Ak Bars Kazan lifted the Gagarin Cup three times over their heads. The second line and two titles in their treasury have three clubs: Metallurg Mg, SKA, Dynamo M. In third place are the clubs that have won the main title once each: Avangard and Salavat Yulaev.
