The 2025 IIHF World Championship is the 88th Ice Hockey World Championship (2025 World Cup), which will be held from May 9 to 25 in two countries, Sweden and Denmark. The tournament has been given a brand identity called “Pulse” to symbolize the energy of hockey, fan unity and a grand sporting celebration.
Cities and stages of the tournament
– Stockholm (Sweden) will host the Group A matches, two quarterfinals, semifinals, bronze medal match and final.
– Herning (Denmark) will be the second venue, where Group B matches, two quarterfinals will be played.
Competition format
The tournament involves 16 strongest national teams divided into 2 groups. In the group stage, the teams play on a round-robin basis “each against each other” according to the following scoring system:
- 3 points – victory in regulation time.
- 2 points – victory in overtime or shootout.
- 1 point – defeat in overtime.
- 0 points – loss in regulation time.
Overtime periods in the group stage last 5 minutes in a 3-on-3 format (plus a goalie).
Playoffs and regulations
The top 4 teams from each group qualify for the quarterfinals. The last placed teams go to the first division of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
All playoff matches are played in one match:
- Main time – 3 periods of 20 minutes.
- In case of a tie – 10-minute overtime (3 on 3) until the “golden goal”.
- If the winner is not revealed – shootout.
The Final has a special regulation: overtime periods last 20 minutes until the first goal is scored.
Awards and rankings
- The champion will receive the IIHF Cup, 1200 rating points and a cash prize.
- At the end of the tournament, the best players will be determined: forward, defenseman, goalkeeper and MVP.
The Russian and Belarus national teams will again be unable to participate in the tournament due to the suspension of their IIHF membership.
In the decades of the world hockey championship, only 8 national teams have conquered the top of the podium. In this elite club:
- The absolute record holder – the Canadian national team with 28 gold medals
- The heir to the Soviet school – the Russian team (including USSR victories) – 27 championship titles
