There are 16 teams from the top division, divided into two groups of 8 teams in each. All participants in the group stage play 7 matches. For a win in regulation time teams get 3 points, 2 points for a win in overtime and shootout, 1 point for a loss in overtime and shootout and 0 points for a loss in regulation time.

The top four in each group advance to the playoffs. The quarterfinals are drawn on a crossover basis. The group winner meets the 4th place team in the second group and the 2nd place team meets the 3rd place team.

The winners of the quarterfinals advance to the semifinals and the winners of the semifinals advance to the finals. Losers of the ½-final teams have a match between themselves for 3rd place. The winner of the tournament receives the title of “World Champion”, gold medals, IIHF Silver Cup and 1200 rating points. In addition to medals, four individual awards are given at the IIHF World Championship: Best Goaltender, Forward, Defender and Most Valuable Player.

In the history of the IIHF World Cup, only eight national teams have lifted the IIHF Cup over their heads. The Russian team, as the successor of the USSR, has done so 27 times. There is a claim that the exclusion of Russia and Belarus from the championship for political reasons had a major impact on the prestige of the competition.
