VTB United League 2024-2025 is the 16th season of the international men’s basketball tournament, which will take place from September 21, 2024 to May 2025. The competition is organized under the auspices of the Russian Basketball Federation (RFB) and is held with the financial support of title sponsor VTB Commercial Bank.
Twelve teams will take part in the tournament, 11 of which represent Russia and one from Kazakhstan. Previously participating in the competition BC “Runa” and “Minsk” will no longer play due to financial and organizational difficulties. These circumstances led to changes in the structure of the tournament:
- The regular championship will be played in one stage, where teams will play in 4 rounds (each team will play 2 home and away matches against each opponent). The top six teams directly qualify for the playoffs.
- Teams ranked 7th through 10th will advance to the play-in round. The top two teams will receive additional playoff berths, and the remaining two teams will occupy the final 9th and 10th places.
- The playoff format (Belov Cup) remains unchanged. In the ¼ finals and in the series for bronze medals are played to 3 wins, and in the semifinals and finals – to 4 wins. The playoff scheme is presented below:
- The champion of Russia will be the best Russian team based on the results of the playoff round.
The main criterion for the distribution of teams in the table is the percentage of wins, then the number of points scored and, in case of equality, the difference of points scored and conceded.
Interesting fact: The Belov Trophy in a new design was presented by the league in 2017. The trophy in its shape resembles the torch that legendary Soviet and Russian basketball player Sergey Belov carried at the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games. The cup also depicts Belov himself and his famous shot in the legendary match against the U.S. national team.
In addition to the championship title, the league awards 12 individual honors, including MVP (Most Valuable Player), Sniper of the Year, and Coach of the Year. Also, for outstanding contributions to the league, you can also get into the Hall of Fame, where 30 people are already enshrined.
